Inspired or Energized?

Much of the news world was focused on Diana Nyad over Labor Day weekend, but hey, I was in water, too. I waded in the ocean and floated on my back in a pool.

What do you mean, that’s not impressive?

Just because Diana Nyad swam over 100 miles in 53 hours at age 64 through powerful waves with poisonous jellyfish and without a shark cage; while I tiptoed near the seashore and later dog paddled in a heavily chlorinated pool, you’re not impressed?

Me either. I don’t know much about Diana Nyad, but I was inspired by what she said as she victoriously stumbled upon the shore in Key West:

  • Never, ever give up
  • It’s never too late to chase your dreams
  • This may look like a solo sport, but it’s a team effort

Her statements are inspirational and applicable to each of us, no matter our age or aspirations.

But I require more than inspiration. I can’t do life with just my own strength. I will give up, left to my own resources. I'll quit chasing my dreams, and I'll forget that I am on a supernatural team.

That’s why I need to be energized by the power found in these promises:

Now glory be to God, who by his mighty power at work within us is able to do far more than we would ever dare to ask or even dream of—infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, or hopes. May he be given glory forever and ever through endless ages because of his master plan of salvation for the Church through Jesus Christ (Ephesians 3:20-21 TLB).

I have no plans to become a long-distance swimmer. But I do hope to continue dreaming big dreams for God and relying on His power to bring them to pass.

  1. Thank goodness God didn't leave us to just rely on our own.

  2. Great application of Nyad's 3 statements--a perfect fit for Scriptural advice. Nyad is a wise woman, isn't she...and she sounds spunky too. I think God likes us to be spunky sometimes : )
    Great reminders, dear friend.

  3. Awesome post! It seems that I've read quite a few today about being tired. :). But I love the idea of being on a supernatural team! Thanks for the inspiration and energy from God's Word.

  4. I would do laps if I had a pool to swim in but I would never swim around jelly fish like Dianna Nyad di!! I have been stung by a Man of War strand washed up on the beach from a colony. That was enough for me! Nyad is inspiring but your post took me farther. I can't do life in my own strength and whenever I try I fall flat!!

Each week I write a BOG (Brag On God) post. My prayer is that my words will invite you to brag on God, too. And together we'll make God smile.
